6 Podcasts for Book Lovers
One of those such sources of non-typical literary delight is podcasts. Between shows dedicated to reading published works, scripted radio-dramas, and reviews or coverage of our favorite book-inspired TV shows, listening to podcasts is a great way to enjoy a large amount of content while you’re on the go. Whether we’re driving to the office, out walking our dog Tonks, or just chilling in the studio, here are a few of the book themed podcasts that we recommend for fellow book lovers.
The New Yorker Fiction Podcast
Deborah Treisman is one of those lucky few who has the job that most can only dream of. As the Fiction Editor for The New Yorker, Deborah Treisman is the gatekeeper of all things fictitious at one of the country's top publications. Before stepping into her role as the Fiction Editor, Mrs. Treisman functioned as the paper’s deputy fiction editor for five years, and as the managing editor for Grand Street, a literary quarterly before that. To say that Treisman knows her stuff when it comes to literature is to say that Stephen Hawking was “good” at theoretical physics. The New Yorker Fiction Podcast airs monthly and consists of readings and discussions between Treisman and a slew of prestigious literary guests. It’s a must-hear for any serious fiction lover.
Lore
With the tagline, “Because sometimes the truth is more frightening than fiction.” Lore is a podcast that will infiltrate your mind and stick with you long after you’ve stopped listening. Created, hosted, written, and produced by Aaron Mahnke, Lore is all about examining real-life scary stories. By exposing the darker side of history and exploring the creatures, people, and places that until now seemed like only the stuff of nightmare, Lore truly lives up to the promise of truth being more frightening than fiction. With new episodes airing every two weeks, on Mondays, Lore is currently in its eighth season with no signs of stopping anytime soon.
If you find that you enjoy this show, the producers of The Walking Dead and The X-Files have recently created a TV show version of the widely popular podcast that can be found on Amazon. Additionally, you can now purchase the Lore book series, The World of Lore, which contains illustrated versions of some of the most popular Lore tales.
The Book Review
The Book Review by The New York Times is surprisingly not at all what it sounds like. Just kidding; The Book Review is exactly that – a podcast in which hosts review books. Hosted by Pamela Paul, this podcast brings together some of the world’s top authors and critics to provide lively conversation around some of today’s hottest publications. A typical podcast will include an in-depth review of the week’s novel, a discussion on what each of the guests is currently reading, and an overview on what happening right now in the greater literary world. This podcast really gives you a behind the scenes look inside the entire world of publishing.
The Guardian Books
Produced by, you guessed it, The Guardian, The Guardian Books podcast is another great resource for book reviews and interview with your favorite authors. Hosted by Claire Armitstead, Richard Lea, Sian Cain, all of whom write or edit for the newspaper in one form or another, the podcast is touted as the perfect companion for bookworms. By investigating thematic trends in contemporary writing, The Guardian Books podcast goes beyond singular publications to prompt discussion on the greater publishing industry as a whole.
3BookGirls
If you like snark, inappropriate comments, silliness, and of course books, then the 3BookGirls podcast is for you. Hosted by, you guessed it, three book-loving girls, the show is relatively small compared to the others on our list, but its big personality more than makes up the difference. The show is released every week and consists of lively discussions about some of the group’s favorite. 3BookGirls is unique in that it feels as if you’re a part the girl’s small, intimate book club when listening.
Fully Booked
Another publishing-insider podcast, the Fully Booked podcast is brought to you by the editors at Kirkus Reviews. With Kirkus being one of the world’s most reliable source of high-quality reviews, you know that this podcast is going to be good before you even start listening. The show is co-hosted by Kirkus’s very own Editor in Chief, Clay Smith, and one of the magazine’s columnists, Megan Labrise. The pair provides readers with behind-the-scenes insights, honest reviews of today’s best sellers, and introduce you to some new titles that you may not have found on your own.
